Bhairava Ashtami
Bhairab Ashtami is a Hindu holy day commemorating the birth of Bhairab, the terrifying and fierce incarnation of Shiva. It occurs during the fortnight of the decaying moon (Krishnapaksha) on the eighth lunar day (Ashtami) of Kartika or Margashirsha of the Hindu month. Bhairab is revered for success, wealth, health and removal of obstacles.
On Bhairab Ashtami, 24-hour bhakti is performed, which includes stories and prayers of Bhairab, Shiva and Parvati. Bhairab should be worshiped at midnight with conch shells, bells and drums. It is said that if Bhairab Ashtami is observed, the devotee is freed from sin and fear of death. Bhairab is called Dandapani because he performs danda or austerities to punish sinners. He rides a dog, so he is also known as Swasb which means "whose horse is a dog". In Tamil Nadu, Bhairab was given Medu Bhada Mala and Gur Pongal. Flowers and sweets are offered to Bhairab, Shiva, Shiva's wife Parvati and Bhairab's vehicle dog. Milk, sweets, yogurt and other foods are also given as gifts to the dog.
